How to scan a QR code on Android

Scanning takes a few seconds.

  1. Open QR Code Scanner and allow camera access when Android asks. The scanner needs it to read codes.
  2. Point the camera at the QR code or barcode and hold it steady in the frame.
  3. Read what the code contains. Check the address carefully if it is a link.
  4. Choose to open, copy or share the result.
  5. Turn the flash on if the code is in a dark place, and clear your scan history whenever you like.

Frequently asked questions

How do I scan a QR code with my Android phone?

Open the app, allow camera access and point the camera at the code. The app reads it and shows the contents, and you choose whether to open, copy or share it.

Is it safe to open links from a QR code?

Not always. A code can hide an unsafe or misleading link. The app shows you what the code contains before you act on it, so check the address and only open links from sources you trust.

Does the app save photos of the codes I scan?

No. Camera frames are used only to detect a code and are not saved. The app can keep a history of the scanned contents, which you can turn off, delete or clear.

Does it work in the dark?

Yes. A flash toggle lets you light up the code in low light.

Why does the app need camera permission?

The camera is how the app reads codes, so the scanner cannot work without it. The app does not use the camera for anything else.

Is QR Code Scanner free?

The app is free and supported by ads, with consent choices where the law requires them.
